Pediatric Adolescent Program

Pediatric Adolescent Program

Head injury among children is one of the most serious healthcare issues facing parents, clinicians, and schools in the US today. Centre for Neuro Skills is known for its excellence in caring for children and adolescents, and our Pediatric and Adolescent Brain Injury Program is designed exclusively for patients up to 18 years of age.

A key aspect of pediatric rehabilitation is helping patients regain and maintain their study skills, focusing on developmental skills, regaining independence, and reintegration into the educational setting. Brain injury not only interrupts a student’s life, it can impair future
learning capability, if appropriate treatment is not sought.

CNS therapists, nurses, and case managers establish treatment goals with the patient and their family, and together, become collaborators in the patient’s return to school. A comprehensive treatment approach puts the patient and family at the center of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation professionals providing residential, day treatment, and outpatient rehabilitative services, depending on location. For each child or adolescent, a program is structured with rehabilitation services, educational development, and recreational activity. Evaluation of functional outcome goals are established and modified throughout the patient’s rehabilitation.

SCHOOL SERVICES

Following a brain injury in a child or adolescent, the ability to learn and accomplish milestone skills becomes a challenge. CNS’ educational program is designed to help patients achieve measurable development outcomes. At CNS, an educational therapist evaluates each child’s learning style and creates an individualized program. A classroom setting with a curriculum base offers a unique opportunity to enhance learning.

The therapists can assist with the transition back into the school environment, including communication with the school, participation in meetings, and provision of written modifications or learning tips, according to the student’s specific needs.

The goal at CNS is to work together with the family and school system to facilitate a successful reintegration back into the classroom setting upon completion of the therapy services. CNS is an educational resource that seeks to ease the impact of traumatic brain injury and its effect on the ability to learn and grow.

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES

The family education program is designed to inform the parents, siblings, and other key members in the patient’s life about traumatic brain injury. CNS counselors work with patients as they recover, while supporting families as they adjust to challenges. Families not able to participate on-site can access the family education program through teleconferencing. The pediatric staff provides continuum of care from admission to discharge as the patient transitions back into their home, school, and community.
