Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:44, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Re: Hex color identification[edit]
Because the compression is so heavy on this image, I've decided to pull the colours from http://www.itsportsnet.com/leagues/7711/graphics/acha.gif, which seems to be a more exact logo.
The blue interior is:
- 100069
The red interior is
- D63136
Also, check out http://www.nattyware.com/pixie.php, which is a fantastically small stand-alone colour-picker program. Really good for situations like this.— Huntster (t @ c) 06:13, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Renaming of "File:CityCountyBuildingPittsburgh.JPG"[edit]
You requested for the file "File:CityCountyBuildingPittsburgh.JPG" to be renamed. However, I note that the English Wikipedia article "Pittsburg City-County Building" refers to the building by the name "Pittsburg City-County Building". Can you provide some evidence (e.g., a link to an official website) to show that the building is actually called the "County Office Building"? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 07:39, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Re: OTRS Request[edit]
Hi! There was a single ticket (#2006061810007652) from June 2006 giving permission for images from asergeev.com to be used under GFDL (and given when it was issued, these can use the "migration=relicense" parameter. Do you have any images in particular that this may apply to? And regarding the Cornell image you mentioned, the applied OTRS ticket is the correct one. I've gone ahead and cleaned it up a bit. If there's anything else I can help with, let me know. — Huntster (t @ c) 10:42, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Deprecated License[edit]
Hello. Thank you for uploading Image:Arts Quad and Goldwin Smith Hall.jpg, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the image correctly? If you are not able to do this, the image will be deleted in 7 days.

RfD[edit]
Well, I work a lot of RfD a day, and always try to judge them with objectivity, honesty and good faith. In this process I admit there's room for errors, but frankly I see nothing copyrightable in a Justice's scales. Anyway you're free to resubmit it for deletion and I wouldn't take part in the new RfD. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 11:51, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

DvoraBochman's Art work[edit]
Being new to commons - I am not sure what you think is problematic with the works you nominated for deletion? They were not only painted/sculptured by Dvora but also modified and uploaded by her. The uploaded photographs are therefore duly licensed for use in wikipedia. Please point me to any policy stating otherwise - since she has voiced an interest in upload new versions of some of these images as well as some new pictures. Congratulations, Dear Reviewer[edit]
Hi GrapedApe, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:
- importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
- importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.
You can also add {{User reviewer}} or {{User trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!--Morning Sunshine (talk) 02:10, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Rereviewing of Flickr files should not be requested[edit]
Hi GrapedApe, I noticed that you asked a rereview of some images (e.g. File:FN MAG M240H In CH-47.jpg) that had passed Flickrreview before. The idea of this review is that it is veryfied that the image was released under a free license. This cc-by or cc-by-sa license is irrevokable and therefore the later licensing under a more strict license, for instance nc or nd, does NOT change the usability here. The older release under the cc-by or cc-by-sa is still valid AND verified. Please take that into account. Rereviewing is therefore not a good idea - it could lead to incorrectly motivated deletions. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 08:09, 8 February 2013 (UTC) P.S. The reviewbot checks the image size as well as the license.
- Comment: You asked for a new flickrreview on an image that had passed flickrreview...and I had to check and see that it already passed flickrreview here? This is bad practise since once an image passes flickrreview, it is considered passed for life....and the permission is irrevocable unless there are copy vio problems for which I don't see any--and yes I saw your DR comments on this flickr account owner's pictures. Please don't misuse other people's time on images that passed flickrreview. Just order {{Flickrreview}}s on those images that haven't been reviewed by the flickrbot yet. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:24, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- My bad. I didn't see the previous review template. Will be more careful in the future.--GrapedApe (talk) 12:46, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Crossed timeframes[edit]
I'm visually impaired, so you're moving a bit fast, even impatiently for me...
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Northeastern_Pennsylvania -- What do you think, the text parameter allows customization of each like your text edit there.
- Green Going... (+{{Regions of Pennsylvania}}+{{Regions of Pennsylvania}}) it looked a lot different on my other computer, this one presented it a lot like a muted black similar to the way navy is a darker deeper blue comparatively. Hence the unified message template just now completed is in your basic boring format. Fiddle as you like. The two are working together well, and the Nav matrix can be left floated at need.
- Taking a look at categorization of the templates here would be a good thing, or refer me to whomever is a template guru managing such schema here. My old friends are mostly gone from Wikimedia projects, so not even sure who to ask here.
- On the North Central Pennsylvania... and never got back to that name to tag it with a {{Speedy delete}} as I did South-central Pennsylvania... Felt for both the name syntax should match and there is an existing regional article on en.wikipedia South Central Pennsylvania, so revised the cat names here to comply. Do you want me to tag this one with speedy delete, and have you revert adding it to CFD, or what?
- I'm going to assume it'll be best to eliminate the category and speedy delete it.
- You revert that if you disagree and have a different agenda.
- Just did that, and annotated both places with the Speed D state. Don't run so fast! LOL!!!!
, you've got me lapped and panting... just annotated
Best regards // FrankB 17:49, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
On templates[edit]
With some of the cross editing I found I was doing found some images BOTS nominated for transfer here, AND in the process of giving human blessings by defining |human= params, decided to make proper categories. That lead to w:Template:IfCommons, which should be ported here... only question is whether there is something already doing that auto cat switching, or whether the parserfunctions nesting will create BOT problems. Given the huge dependency on ParserFunctions that have taken over Wikimedia Foundation projects since we (Tim, CB Dunkerson, and I) determined parserfunction loading was manageable... can't see it being an issue. So importing: Template:IfCommons.
- It's about 2:00 pm for me, so time to go mow grass. Be around circa dusk in about 4-5 hrs. // FrankB 18:00, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm no answer here? repeat the question: only question is whether there is something already doing that auto cat switching // FrankB 03:47, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about with the auto cat and parser stuff. Fire away with your uploads, I think the categories are at least comprehensible now. --GrapedApe (talk) 04:00, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Moving files[edit]
Can you please use the script for your move requests. Something is malformed and all the templates have to be removed manually, something that is adding time to an already lengthy process. I would also ask if all these rename requests are really needed? They place a huge strain on the servers and taker considerable time for filemovers to undertake (at most I can do about 40 an hour, you just gave file movers about an hour and a half work). Liamdavies (talk) 03:54, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, sorry, I didn't realize it took so much work. (I thought it was mostly bot-managed and fast.) What is the script I should use? I never used it. Do you have a way to mass-revert my additions? If so, go ahead.--GrapedApe (talk) 03:57, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- Now, I see the decline reason #1 "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." Sorry mate--GrapedApe (talk) 03:59, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- No problem, I wish there were a bot, but we approve it and then the file gets moved/reuploaded to the new name, then all usages get changed with our account, and the template gets removed. It takes longer with larger files with lots of usage. I don't mind doing what you've requested, and valid files, but in future the script would be appreciated. Next to the search box there is a little down arrow, if you hover over it a little menu will pop out, there is a move option in there with an autofill script. Much easier for you to make a request :) Liamdavies (talk) 04:02, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Don't worry about, just for future reference :) Liamdavies (talk) 04:02, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
- If it makes a difference, I spent 3 days putting these images in village infoboxes. Since there are often 3-4 other similarly named images in those infoboxes, I felt that the new names would help distinguish these images versus the others.--GrapedApe (talk) 04:13, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Done All files have now been moved. Liamdavies (talk) 08:42, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
GrapedApe, before we go ahead and delete this large list of photos, don't you think it might make sense for someone to reach out to the PHMC to see if they want to grant the Wikimedia Foundation the right to host these images? They might be happy to have them on here. Don't you think it's at least worth a try? --Mblumber (talk) 02:19, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- I did think about it. Take a look at Historical Marker Image Request. That seems pretty unlikely, but if you're up for it, it might be worth a shot.--GrapedApe (talk) 02:23, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
- Also, please don't label images where the marker is clearly di minimis as being nominated for deletion. The fact that they are mentioned in the discussion on a group deletion page doesn't mean that they are candidates for deletion, and marking them as such is confusing. Kappa Alpha Psi Province Map[edit]
Hi, GrapedApe. Thank you for your vigilance in protecting intellectual property. However, in the case of File:Kappa_Alpha_Psi_Province_Map.jpg, the only violation was on the part of the fraternity's web designer, who failed to properly cite the source of the file to its author (me) and/or Wikimedia Commons. I took the time to address the issue here: File_talk:Kappa_Alpha_Psi_Province_Map.jpg. No offense taken on my part; I simply wanted to follow up with you regarding the matter. Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]
Hello GrapedApe, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
