Comments[edit]

I rather have one request for all these categories. I prefer the Category:Commons:something form because that system works very well at nlwp. Multichill (talk) 10:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that only a few categories have that format here on the Commons:
I can see why those categories need that format.
These 2 below may be changed:
I think the double colon (:) format is confusing to readers. I would rather avoid it where possible. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:20, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Another idea may be to put a period instead of a colon. Like this:
This may be more understandable to readers. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:22, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The dot doesn't seem very logical to me. At nlwp we use the namespace prefix in categories too, so thinkgs like category:Commons:, category:Template:, category:User:. Works good over there, might work here. Multichill (talk) 09:25, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(unindent) I guess it is a matter of habit. Please look at

I don't want to use the period except in a few cases such as

Those category names don't always make sense without a period or colon.

Other category names makes sense without a period or colon:

Category:Commons:Geocoding could be changed to

Category:Commons:Potd (en) could be changed to

I also know the current naming, but from de.wp. I don't like two colons being in a full pagename, neither on de nor here on Commons. Pages should only contain one colon, being the colon that sepearates the namespace from the pagename. I could also think of a few instances where this would be especially horrible: Category:User:Retired (it's just not correct that way, the people are "retired users", not "User:Retired"), Category:Commons:Policies (Since you say that something is a "Commons policy", I also prefer the category being named "Commons policies"), "Category:Template:Translated:Header" ("Category:Translated header templates" is just more fitting, it lists the things in a better order than "Template:Translated:Header"). Furthermore, I think the capitalized letter after the colon is horrible. I honestly say that I hate general nouns being capitalized in English, as it's just unusual there. I also second Timeshifter on that's confusing to readers. In the beginning on de.wp, this has confused me. To keep things consistent, I'm for moving this cat. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:06, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dot or period[edit]

The more I think about it the more I like requiring the dot after the word Commons. Since Multichill and others have bots, Multichill and others with bots could implement this quickly for categories and pages that start with the word "Commons."

Then we would have consistency in the use of the word "Commons". Plus, there should be a space after the dot. That makes more grammatical sense.

I really dislike the pages with the colons. It confuses categories and pages.

In this category for example:

Here are some page examples:

I prefer this:

Here are some page examples:

"Commons" indicates a work page or category. As this template spells out: {{Resources}}

The Commons. format makes for better clarity about all this. It helps editors and readers in both identifying and naming categories and pages for internal Commons work. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:35, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it is not exactly true that all pages starting with "commons" are only internal work pages. Some are help pages that are helpful to general readers too, and not just helpful for internal commons work. See the pages categorized under these category headings:
Category:Commons guidelines
Category:Commons help
So for now I guess I most dislike the double colons in a name. I can live with the single colon in page names for now. I would prefer to substitute a dot or period for the pages too. There are a lot of pages in the above 2 categories. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:45, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't like the dot. Just leave it out. Let's stick to the Commons <something> format. Multichill (talk) 18:13, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(unindent) Is there a guideline? Please see this diff and its edit comment: ""moved Commons. Convert tables and charts to wiki code to Commons:Convert tables and charts to wiki code over redirect: revert, this may be done for categories, but not for actual Commons pags, as this puts them in the gallery namespace"

Is the current guideline that pages must use a colon after "Commons"? This can be very confusing, especially to the average editor or reader who wants to edit, find, sort or name pages and categories. Especially since it seems that a colon is not recommended after "Commons" in category names. See Category talk:Commons:Geocoding.

We really need a clear guideline for both cases. It is common in page names on Wikipedia to have commas, parentheses ( ), and other punctuation. What is wrong with a period? Then we could have one guideline for both categories and pages. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:14, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a guideline, but a technical thing. The page Commons.Whatever gets recognized as a gallery by the software, whereas Commons:Whatever gets recognized as a project page. For categories, it doesn't matter if you use the dot, the colon or just a space, as long as you use the prefix "Category:". --The Evil Public Computer (talk) 06:15, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I see from these 2 searches below that the colon is the norm after "Commons" and "Wikipedia" at the beginning of page names:
Oh right. I missed something. I thought we were still talking about categories. Commons:<whatever> is a namespace for project related pages (just like wikipedia: at Wikipedia). At nlwp we categorized the wikipedia:... page into category:wikipedia:.... categories. That's why I suggested naming the categories here in the Category:Commons:<something> form, but Category:Commons_<something> is fine with me too as long as we're consistent in our naming of these categories. Multichill (talk) 06:46, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(unindent) Consistency is what is important to me, also, concerning category names. I can live with any system for category names as long as it is consistent. I prefer not having double colons, and now I think I see why it is discouraged on the Commons. It confuses namespaces. See Help:Namespaces.

The Evil IP address example of "Category:Template:Translated:Header" makes it look like there are 3 namespaces there. Actually, it is the category namespace. It is categorizing items in the template namespace. But the category is still in the category namespace. The Evil IP address also pointed out that "Category:Translated header templates" is more fitting. I think it flows better. I could live with the multiple colons though, but not if it confuses namespaces.

I think Commons:Categories#Major_categories needs to be clarified to tell people not to use double colons in category names. I do not see any double colons in the top subcategories at Category:Commons-en.

I do not see any double colons in the top subcategories at en:Category:Wikipedia administration or en:Category:Wikipedia

As for page names I found a guideline page that explains that Wikipedia: is required at English Wikipedia for pages:

"Pages in this namespace will always have the prefix Wikipedia:. They can also be reached by alias WP: or the standard (for any MediaWiki site) prefix Project:."

Also, Commons: is required at the Commons for pages:

"Pages in the Commons: project namespace will always have the prefix Commons:."
